The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is filled with fantastic vendors and fabulous products. Meet Lovin’ Mama Farm, a four-year veteran of the Winter Market, bringing their passion, dedication, and the very best of local to our community.
What can shoppers expect throughout the winter season at your table?
We offer fresh greens from our greenhouses during the cold winter months. There’s nothing sweeter than winter grown greens (they have the highest brix content thanks to the cold nights), and they will keep your immune system healthy and strong. Plan on microgreens, shoots, spinach, baby lettuce, bok choy, kale, chard, baby mustard, tatsoi, purple mizuna, and mesclun mix. Additionally, we have storage crops including onions, garlic, carrots, beets, napa cabbage, daikon radishes, purple top turnips, and dried flowers. And finally, shop from our supply of canned goods from our farm kitchen – including salsa, pickled peppers, dried herbs, dried edible flowers, and dried chiles. Everything is certified organic, and grown with love and care for Mama Earth and our hard working farmers.
What is your favorite thing about vending with the Saratoga Farmers’ Market?
We are so honored to have a space to sell our organic produce and flowers directly to our Saratoga Community! We grow for you. Our farm is only 23 miles from Saratoga City Center. We harvest the day before market, so you can be sure that our produce will last for several weeks. There’s truly nothing like fresh picked, organic produce grown within 50 miles of where you live!
How many years have you been at the winter market?
This is our 4th season at the winter market. It’s a big deal to be able to grow fresh greens year round in this frigid winter climate. It has taken us years of building up the infrastructure and staff to be able to pull off winter growing. It brings us so much joy to provide for our employees and our eaters year round.
Do you participate in the summer market?
Yes! We grow 400+ varieties of heirloom and organic vegetables, fruits, and flowers, and in the summer season we have a dizzying array of produce and flowers. We kick off the summer season at the start of May with tens of thousands of specialty tulips and hand tied bouquets for Mothers’ Day. Then we move into spring veg with a focus on greens, alliums, herbs, and baby root vegetables. During high summer we produce a massive amount of cherry and heirloom tomatoes. We have really specialized in growing THE BEST summer tomato, and use tricks gained from decades of growing, like dry farming our tomatoes to concentrate their sweetness. We also work hard to grow baby lettuce during the dead of summer, to provide for all your summer salads.
What are some of your favorite food combos and bites you enjoy that are farm fresh?
One of my favorite farm based snacks is local sourdough bread, toasted and spread with our Red Tomato Jam, goat cheese, and our Micro Arugula. The tomato jam tastes like summer! Sweet and savory, and micro arugula is the perfect peppery balance.
I’m also partial to pea shoot smoothies for a plant based protein shake. One banana, 1 cup of almond milk, 1 cup of pea shoots, and a tsp of spirulina or other green powder. Blend till smooth, and drink in the deep nutrition! Pea shoots are high in bioavailable protein, and when you use them fresh, rather than a powdered pea protein, you get the added fiber and micronutrients of the fresh pea greens.
